Saanya Chopra is an Indian Canadian emerging interdisciplinary artist and writer, currently based in Ottawa, Ontario. Since her BFA from the University of Ottawa (2023), she focuses on the overlap of language systems; the meeting points of painting, object-making, and creative writing. Her practice investigates the poetics of the vulnerability found in deconstruction and consequently, renewal, often in the context of identity. Across mediums, her treatment of materials and the conceptual and emotional spaces they articulate are often process-centred, full of gradual layers and play with building transparencies. This process allows her to reveal the subtleties of absence, the quiet pauses and gaps that make up these languages. As a second-generation Canadian, cultural identity and our relationship to our environment, as well as our body, are ongoing questions explored in her works. With concern to the presence of absence, Chopra investigates the complexities of diaspora in identity, displacement, and (non)belonging.
