This multimedia installation consists of a series of oil paintings (Stages of Service / Sacrifice, 2023), as well as sculptural woodworking (Function of Futility, 2023), that seek to investigate the tensions between displacement and belonging, both in an emotional capacity, and a material sense.
In Stages of Service / Sacrifice (2023), the imagery of trees and fencing is rooted in recent photographs, taken of interruptions and interventions upon natural growth, and oscillates between the real and imagined. As this is a non-archival treatment of materials, the way in which the paint penetrates the fabric before rotting the canvas is integral to raising questions of belonging.
Within Function of Futility (2023), the idea of a domestic object is deconstructed and re-built, while evoking the concept of utility, with no promise of function. These fragile stools and chairs expand on the boundaries between service and servitude, while giving form to absence.
